It's Elementary

Hey friends, it's been a very busy couple of weeks!!!  I hope autumn finds you all well.  The past couple of days I have been preparing for career days at my child's school, where I will present my occupation to 450-500 school kids.  It's exciting to share my passion with people and especially awesome to speak to youth about grooming.  The school prepared an amazing guide for those of us presenting to follow, so as to share the many facets to our jobs and what classes from primary helped us in our endeavors.  I don't think I've ever thought about my basic learning in this way, however it was a major influence in my job choice.  So, here's what I learned in this process meant for the kids to learn.
1) As much as I hated math in school, I use that darn stuff every day as a pet stylist.  I need to be able to convert measurements from inches to millimeters, I need to understand dilution rates, and I must be able to calculate clients totals.  Math is everywhere in my job, even in the haircuts themselves, some of which require me to accurately set patterns which are mathematic in nature.  Also as self employed I need to understand math to file my taxes appropriately.  Who knew!!!
2)  Understanding basic life science was the best base for my future studies in canine anatomy and health.  I always loved animal and life sciences and this has served me well.  It's imperative that groomers understand the way dogs bodies work and what common skin issues and maladies may effect them.
3) P.E. and involvement in sports serves future groomers well.  Grooming is not for the faint of heart, not all fur friends are playful puppies.  Many clients are elderly or have health issues and will require physical support.  Not all are small, many are large and so groomers must be physically capable of assisting these friends.
These three classes influenced me incredibly in my career, not that others didn't.  Reading and writing help me to share the information I retain with all of you.  History helps me to understand the genetics and occupation of dog breeds going back thousands of years.  Basic education is truly the rock we build up on.
So if you have a little Dr. Doolittle at home, please urge them to embrace their school work.
   It is invaluable and precious.
